Pay by Bank UK: open banking payments for merchants

Let customers pay from their bank account through a bank-authorised checkout. Explore UK bank connections, compare payment costs and find the right Wallid setup for your business.

What is Pay by Bank in the UK?

Pay by Bank uses open banking to initiate a payment from a customer’s bank account. The customer chooses their bank and approves the payment through their banking app or online banking, rather than entering card details.

For merchants, it connects bank payment to checkout: the payment can be associated with the order and its status passed back to your integration. This makes it different from simply displaying a sort code and account number and asking customers to make a manual transfer.

Wallid offers Shopify, WooCommerce and API integration routes.

Banks to check for your UK checkout

Bank coverage is about the customer’s paying account. It does not, by itself, determine where your business can be registered or which merchant categories can be accepted.

The following bank-account connections are listed for payment initiation. This list includes all banks integrated with Wallid. The banks available to your store are determined during onboarding.

Pay by Bank, manual bank transfer, Bacs and Faster Payments

These terms describe different parts of a payment. Open banking provides the initiation and authorisation flow; the payment system moves the money.

Pay by Bank, manual bank transfer, Bacs and Faster Payments
Method or systemWhat merchants should compare
Pay by Bank through open bankingCustomer authorisation, available banks and accounts, payment status, integration and total cost
Manual bank transferBank charges, customer references and how payments are matched to orders
BacsA multi-working-day cycle commonly used for credits and Direct Debits; it is not an instant checkout method
Faster PaymentsA UK transfer system; transaction and daily limits depend on the bank, account and payment channel
CHAPSA UK system used for high-value, time-sensitive transfers; check the bank’s charges and operating cut-offs

This comparison explains the UK payment landscape. It does not mean that every system above is available through Wallid.

What does Pay by Bank cost?

Wallid’s published standard UK transaction rate is 1% + £0.25. At that rate, the transaction fee is £1.25 on a £100 payment and £10.25 on a £1,000 payment.

Compare the total cost at your actual order value and monthly volume. Include any platform transaction charges, subscriptions, bank charges and other terms that apply to your setup. A percentage fee is not automatically cheaper than a capped or fixed-fee alternative, especially for large payments.

For Shopify-specific costs, see Pay by Bank vs Shopify Payments.

High-value payments: check the amount, not just the bank name

If you sell expensive products, the important question is whether customers can complete your typical payment amount through the banks and accounts they use.

A bank’s general transfer limit may differ from its open banking limit. Personal and business accounts can also have different limits, and daily allowances or security checks may affect a payment. Confirm the expected payment range for your checkout; there is no single universal Wallid limit established by this bank catalogue.

High-volume payment processing

A large monthly turnover creates different requirements from one large payment. Share your monthly payment count, average and maximum order value, expected peaks and integration requirements when discussing your setup.

Review commercial terms, payment-status handling and reconciliation together. For Shopify workflows, see Pay by Bank reconciliation. For a custom integration or high-volume enquiry, explore Wallid’s payment API.

Pay by Bank for specialist and high-risk businesses

If you are researching a high-risk payment gateway in the UK, Pay by Bank may be an additional payment option to assess. It is a bank-payment method; a bank connection does not grant merchant approval or provide a card-acquiring merchant account.

Wallid’s existing specialist-business material covers sectors such as CBD, supplements, vapes and other categories. Applications are reviewed individually, including the products sold, business model and relevant requirements.

UK Pay by Bank questions

It is a bank payment initiated through an open banking journey. In a merchant checkout, the customer authorises the payment with their bank and the integration receives payment-status information. A manual transfer usually requires a separate payment instruction and a process for matching it to the order.

Wallid has integrations with banks including Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds Bank, NatWest, Monzo, Starling and others listed. The directory shows the listed account types. The banks available to your store are determined during onboarding.

Business-account connections are included for banks marked Business in the directory. The bank connections and account types available to your store are determined during onboarding.

Check the customer’s bank, account, open banking payment limits and any daily allowance, as well as your merchant setup. Do not use a payment system’s headline maximum as a checkout guarantee.

Payment authorisation, payment confirmation and funds becoming available are different events. Timing depends on the banks, checks and payment setup. Confirm the status your integration uses before treating an order as paid or releasing goods.

Suitability depends on the business and its products. Wallid reviews applications individually. Neither UK bank connectivity nor an industry guide means automatic approval.

No. Compare transaction fees and any caps, platform charges, subscriptions and reconciliation work at the same payment amount and monthly volume. Ask for terms that match your business.

No. The list describes customer-bank connections. Merchant registration, receiving-account requirements, currency and category eligibility are separate checks.
